Welcome to the Salt Story Archive. Since 1973 the students of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies have been capturing the culture, people, and landscape of Maine. Now this wealth of collective work is available online. Hear voices of Maine in radio stories about triumph and loss. See faces of Maine in over four decades of photographs. See people and places in Maine using multimedia. Read stories about the people of Maine that make this state the varied and storied place it is. View the full versions of every Salt Magazine and published book.
This is an archive of work produced by Salt students between 1974 and today. The stories and their titles are presented exactly as they were when they were created at the time, but in some instances, we may have updated the language of the piece’s original description (which would have been originally written by the author or producer of the piece) in order to reflect current language practices. Some work may include language and depictions that are dated, insensitive, ignorant, misogynist, homophobic, transphobic, imperialist and/or racist—language and depictions that Salt does not condone.
