Maine doesn’t have a strong public transportation system. It’s a rural state; there are more people here than cars; and the state’s funding levels for public transit are low. In 2019, most states invest five dollars per person to fund public transit, while Maine spends eighty-six cents. Producer Carly Peruccio travels from Portland to northern Maine on the bus, and she meets people along the way who rely on public transit to navigate throughout the state. How does the system serve them, and how is it failing them?
